The 1:3 crop ratio is one of my standard ratios for panoramas, and it is a good format for this elongated composition.

Slot canyons can be very photogenic, though the composition and lighting can be challenging. I was satisfied with some of my images, though I did not manage to make the 6.5 million dollars Peter Lik made with his image Phantom, also an image of a slot canyon. Image 9.6 is my photographic rendition of a slot canyon. It did not make as much profit, but it serves as a good compositional example. The 1:3 crop ratio is one of my standard ratios for panoramas, and it is a good format for this elongated composition. The composition is rather minimalistic; it features the wavy curves of the canyon, carved by violent water turbulence when it is flooded. The lighting, coupled with the structure, divided the canyon into a few sections of various colors, as shown in image 9.7. The negative space joins them to be the focal point and provides a smooth contrast to the rough texture of the rocky walls.
